The ultimate guide to breakfast foods: Toasties!

The ultimate guide to breakfast foods: Toasties!

A toastie is a perfect dish for a lazy morning. It can be as basic or as elaborate as you like, and it’s easy to make. All you need are some bread, cheese, and an oven!

But what if we told you that there was even more to this humble dish than meets the eye? Are there many different types of toasties out there – all with their unique flavours and textures? You might not think so at first glance, but once you start looking into them, well, then your mind will be blown! And that’s just the beginning. The world of toastie-making doesn’t stop at plain old cheese on bread – oh no! There’s plenty more waiting for your taste buds in these recipes.

Toasties are a simple, satisfying breakfast.

Toasties are a simple, satisfying breakfast that can be eaten quickly and on the go. Toasties were invented in New Zealand, but they’re now famous all over the world. All you need to make them is bread, butter or margarine (or some other spread), cheese, and any leftover vegetables or meat that you might have in your fridge. You can also add sauces to jazz up the toastie too!

Think of how you eat toast every morning. It’s quick and easy to prepare- no pots and pans needed. To make it even easier for you, we’ve found a few favourite recipes for toasties that are incredibly delicious!

How to make the perfect toastie?

1. Ingredients: bread, eggs, butter, ham/cheese/mushrooms/another filling of choice

2. Method: toast bread on both sides until crisp and golden brown; while still warm, spread each slice with butter; crack an egg into the centre of both pieces of toast; sprinkle with cheese, mushrooms etc.; place under the griller for 10-20 minutes or until the egg white has set, but the yolk remains runny (don’t worry if it oozes over the edge of your sandwich); serve immediately.

Recipes for your next breakfast toastie:

1. Bacon, egg and cheese toasties – open-faced sandwiches with eggs cooked on top of the other ingredients to allow them to soak up some of the egg white or yolk

2. Avocado, tomato and feta toasties – a perfect lunchtime option as well as a fun breakfast idea; you can add spinach, olives, sun-dried tomatoes or even nachos for a Mexican twist!

3. Bacon, avocado and maple syrup toasties – this is more of an American breakfast that those in Canada and Australia have also adopted; why not try it with banana slices instead?

4. Classic bacon sandwich – don’t forget the ketchup, please! This is so yummy, and it’s even better with cheese or mushrooms!

5. Corned beef, horseradish cheddar and rocket toasties – if you’re a fan of savoury flavours, this recipe is for you; why not try using beer instead of water for cooking the eggs?

6. Ham, egg and pineapple toasties – enjoy this classic comfort food but make sure that your ham is lean so that you don’t have too many calories in one sitting!

7. Honey-glazed pecan banana sandwiches on brioche toasts – add cinnamon or nutmeg to taste if you prefer something more exotic; these are perfect when served warm with coffee.

Why are Toasties so good for you!?

Toasties are a healthy alternative to other breakfast or snack foods. They contain fresh ingredients, and you can get them exactly how you like them! To start with, toast is just so convenient to make; it literally takes seconds. All you need is some bread (preferably white, for high nutritional value), and you’re ready to go. If your bakery has the option of using gluten-free or whole-grain bread, this will help bulk up your dish in terms of nutrition and taste! You could also add items such as cheese spread or peanut butter. This spreads out the flavour further in a subtle way rather than having one big layer. The next step would be adding vegetables.

A toastie recipe of the week :

A toastie recipe of the week. The best recipes are always handed down from one generation to the next, so here’s one for you to try: a hearty, wholesome and filling dish that will satisfy everyone at your table. And if there are any leftovers, they can be frozen and then just heated up in the microwave or oven for another day. So I hope you enjoy this as much as we do!

1 – Eggs Florentine Toastie

Makes 2 toasties, or 4 side servings

Ingredients:

– ¼ cup milk

– 6 chopped baby spinach leaves (or 3 regular sized ones)

Mix the milk and spinach in a bowl. Leave for 5 minutes to soften the greens. Once chilled, drain all excess liquid (if any). Try to pat dry with a paper towel if necessary as well. This step can be omitted if using frozen spinach. If so, thaw before mixing with milk and chopping up into smaller pieces.

Start by spreading butter on both sides of bread slices/toastie buns (I used wholemeal bread). The spread should be evenly distributed but not excessive as you don’t want to end up with a soggy toastie. Then layer the spinach and ¼ of the ham on one slice, evenly distributed. Place another bread slice/buttered side down on top to form a sandwich.

Place sandwich in a pan over medium heat until golden brown (approx. 3-4 minutes). Flip and repeat for another side. For added crispiness, try grilling it at this stage too! Remove from heat once both sides are light golden brown with some darker spots here and there. And you’re done! Serve hot! It’s also good cold though

This is not only a healthy breakfast but also great as a lunchbox filler – especially those picky eater kids! My little

2 – How to make an egg and bacon toastie

Ingredients

– 2 slices of bread (buttered and toasted, or use toastie buns)

– 1 diced rasher of bacon (or more if desired)

– 1 egg fried in a bit of oil, salt and pepper.

Start by spreading butter on both sides of bread slices/toastie buns (I used wholemeal bread). The spread should be evenly distributed but not excessive as you don’t want to end up with a soggy toastie. Then layer the ingredients how you like them (see picture). Place another bread slice/buttered side down on top to form a sandwich.

Pour leftover egg bits into the pan along with contents inside your toasties, stir fry till.

3 – How to make a ham, cheese, and tomato toastie?

Ingredients

– 2 slices of bread (buttered and toasted, or use toastie buns)

– 4 sliced cheese

– 4 pieces of diced ham (or more if desired)

Start by spreading butter on both sides of bread slices/toastie buns (I used wholemeal bread). The spread should be evenly distributed but not excessive as you don’t want to end up with a soggy toastie. Then layer your ingredients how you like them (see picture). Place another bread slice/buttered side down on top to form a sandwich. Fry in the pan over medium heat until golden brown on both sides. (approx 3mins each side) Serve hot! It’s also good cold, though,

Tips for making the perfect toasties every time!

1. Cut the toast lengthwise, not going all the way through so you can have two ‘slices’.

2. Make each piece of toast slightly different in thickness (not too thin or thick) to make it easier to spread the butter onto it.

3. Grate your cheese once it’s been cut into small pieces and cover with a tea towel until ready to use as grating cheese releases moisture from within, which will cause your sandwich to become soggy, so it’s best done; at the last minute!

4. Spread each slice of bread with butter on both sides – this is essential to building a good flavour base for your toastie!

5. Butter makes everything better! If you have some honey or jam
